A Helmsley eatery and bar which brings a touch of Venetian living to Ryedale is celebrating a successful start to its life in the town.
La Trattoria, which opened on Helmsley’s bustling Market Place in June, welcomed 2,500 customers in August – a mix of both local residents and tourists enjoying a summer holiday – yet can only seat 25 people at any one time.
The restaurant, which prides itself on simple Italian food done well, has just launched its Autumn menu, with specialities including a ‘mouth-watering’ flat iron steak with peppercorn sauce, salt beef braised in orange juice for 16-hours, seafood linguine with saffron and lemon and roast chicken and wild mushroom risotto with crispy chicken skin.
The restaurant has also struck up a new partnership with the Helmsley Arts Centre, offering 15 per cent off for diners who are visiting before or after enjoying a show at the centre.
La Trattoria is a traditional Italian name for a less formal restaurant, seen as a sociable meeting place for friends and family to get together. The Helmsley restaurant is open seven days a week, from 8.30am until 11pm, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, as well as snacks at the bar, and caters for those with food intolerances or allergies. In addition to having an in-house bakery and patisserie, La Trattoria also worked with Roost coffee roasters in Malton to create a signature coffee.
The chef and entrepreneur behind La Trattoria is Francois Strydom, who also launched La Pizzeria in Malton in August 2017. He said “We’re not your typical Italian restaurant. We like to think we offer something to everyone. Whether you want to come and enjoy one of our 32 wines by the glass at the bar, or a coffee and a snack, or a full three course meal, we’re happy. We want to be at the heart of the Helmsley community, and one of those places people know will always be open and where they’re guaranteed good food, good drink and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. We’ve been genuinely blown away by the positive feedback and support we’ve been getting, and we’ve loved meeting so many new people. We look forward to meeting more!”
