White Cloth Hall, the latest all-day food and drink venue in Leeds city centre, is set to welcome guests on this upcoming Bank Holiday Weekend.
Highlighting the finest local, independent food traders and suppliers, the eagerly awaited venue is set to welcome the public from noon on Friday 23 August. Available throughout the weekend, this family-friendly spot offers everything necessary for your Bank Holiday festivities, regardless of your company.
Located on Crown Street, just behind Leeds’ Corn Exchange, White Cloth Hall was established in 1775 as a trading hub for the city’s cloth merchants. Now a Grade II* listed building, this iconic structure once served as one of the North’s pivotal marketplaces and is poised to transform into one of Leeds’ most intriguing food and drink venues.
White Cloth Hall has launched, featuring four kitchens that unite Yorkshire culinary favourites like Pizza Loco and Kuala Lumpur Cafe, as well as Salma Modern Mexican and new kitchen concepts from Lupton’s Chop House.
Pizza Loco in North Leeds introduces a novel concept called Morty’s. Morty’s Focacceria will offer its renowned panuozzi sandwiches, along with slices of Sicilian-style sfincione pizza and an assortment of sfizi small plates.
Kuala Lumpur Cafe, known for its robust reputation as a beloved Malaysian eatery in Headingley since 2019, is now making its way to White Cloth Hall in the city centre. The cafe will continue to offer its flavorful small plates and traditional dishes, such as the signature Nasi Lemak, Rendang Curries, and Roti Canai.
The food hall will also feature Lupton’s Chop House, a grill and oyster bar. This new venture from the culinary team behind Whitelock’s Ale House will highlight premium meats and the freshest seafood. Drawing inspiration from traditional Victorian Chop Houses, the menu will honor the variety and excellence of Yorkshire’s produce.
The last kitchen will be occupied by Salma, a Mexican-inspired eatery created by Leeds chef Hugo Monypenny. Hugo, renowned for his award-winning Middle Eastern-inspired restaurant MorMor, brings extensive experience to this new venture. Salma will offer a selection of meticulously prepared Mexican small plates with rich flavors, such as antojitos, tacos, ceviche, and asado, marrying the vibrant tastes of Mexico with the traditional Arabic influences.
White Cloth Hall is more than just its four food kitchens; it will also feature an all-day coffee shop. Opening at 8am on weekdays, it will offer artisan coffee from Meanwood’s Echelon Coffee Roasters, along with a selection of pastries and brunch options.
The main bar will feature an extensive selection of independent craft beers, such as those from Kirkstall Brewery and Five Points, as well as continental lagers and traditional cocktails. Additionally, a specialized wine bar will present a collection of quality wines sourced from notable suppliers, accompanied by a classic range of meticulously mixed cocktails. To enhance the beverage experience, an artisan British charcuterie and antipasti menu will be available.
Ed Mason, Owner of White Cloth Hall and Whitelock’s Managing Director, commented: “We are really excited to finally be launching this latest addition to the Leeds food and drink scene – it’s been a long time in the planning, and we hope we’ve done justice to this beautiful building!
“We are committed to working with interesting, innovative and independent suppliers and food partners. We have a brilliant line up of kitchens – and we hope that people love what we are doing with the different areas of the venue, from the coffee shop to the wine bar to the main food and drink hall.
“We have really opened the space up and connected what were once three separated-out areas – we want to create a welcoming, buzzing, family-friendly hospitality destination, with something for everyone. This amazing building has had a varied history over the past 250 years – we hope we have created something that the city can be proud of for this next chapter in its life!”
