Our verdict: Pizza Express Albion Street Leeds reopening

The reopening of the Pizza Express in Albion Place in Leeds is most welcome news, not only because it sees the return of one of the best pizzerias in the city, but also because it has coincided with the expansion of the menu, as well the launch of a cracking free drink offer. We were therefore keen to get ourselves back down there.

Before we get on with reviewing the food, in these Covid-19 dominated times it’s important to mention the measures Pizza Express have put in place in this regard. Thankfully it was immediately obvious that prior to reopening the restaurant has been working hard to enhance guest and team protection without losing any of its ambience. These measures include a more physically distanced layout, hand sanitiser stations, enhanced hygiene and cleaning procedures, along with regular health checks of team members. The online booking service also makes it easy to reserve a table, while a new digital menu and cashless payment have been introduced to assist and reassure customers. Right, now on to the food…

Starters

To kick off our return we opted for the generously portioned Calamari (£6.95), which came with a hefty slice of fresh lemon, creamy Caesar dressing and a fair sprinkling of parsley. It’s a dish that’s easy to get wrong but we were more than happy with our choice, with the perfectly cooked calamari being wrapped in a delicately crispy batter.

Our other starter was also a seafood selection, as we plumped for the tasty Garlic King Prawns (£6.45), which was a sizeable meal in itself, especially with the addition of four of Pizza Express’ well-renowned dough balls: ideal for mopping up the rich and flavoursome sauce.

Mains

For our mains we went for the American (£13.30) on a Romana base. As it’s stretched thinner than usual, the base was delightfully crispy and provided a fantastic stage on which the Pepperoni, mozzarella and tomato could shine.

Our other choice main also came on a Romana base (Pollo ad Astra £13.95) Plenty of chicken was complemented superbly by the sweetness of red peppers and red onion, while liberal amounts of mozzarella, tomato, Cajun spices and garlic oil ensured there were a plethora of flavours to please the palate.

Our verdict

Pizza Express was always a safe bet for a quality night evening out before Covid-19 raised its ugly head and it’s a blessed relief that the restaurants enforced absence from our high streets has not led to any reduction in its offering or the attentiveness of its staff. In fact, the expanded menu and the free drink offer means there’s even more reason to book yourself a table!
