Celebrate World Gin Day with a true Yorkshire spirit

While a classic G&T is a truly beautiful thing, as today is World Gin Day (Saturday 13th June) there’s every reason to celebrate this most noble of spirits with something a bit more fancy. To help spark inspiration, here’s ten cocktail recipes selected by some of Yorkshire’s best gin producers. Enjoy!


Gin Sour

(Kindly selected by Yorkshire Dales Distillery)

Ingredients:

  • 50ml York Distillery Honeyed Rhubarb Gin (discount code: “covid19” to receive 19% off all sales)
  • 20ml Lemon juice
  • Sugar Syrup (Sugar & Water – 1 cup of each)
  • Egg white (Optional)

Method

Place all the liquids into a shaker filled with plenty of ice

Shake for approximately 20 seconds

Allow the liquid to settle before straining into the martini glass

Squeeze the orange peel slice into the liquid and gently rub around the rim of the glass.

Place a fresh orange peel slice in the drink


The Rising Phoenix

Ingredients

Method
Firstly, add the gin and marmalade to a cocktail shaker and stir to dissolve.

When ready, add the other ingredients and add one ice cube before shaking until it has dissolved.

Next, add ice and shake again.

Fine strain into a chilled coupette glass and garnish with a piece of orange zest cut into a flame.


Roman Fruit Punch-Style Fizz

Ingredients

  • 50ml York Gin Roman Fruit
  • 150ml Fever-Tree Sicilian Lemonade
  • Over ice in a tall glass
  • Garnish – Dried Fruit or hibiscus – enhances both the flavour and colour

Method

Ice first, gin next, then lemonade, gently stir and add your garnish. 


Deck Chair

Method

Reserve one strawberry for garnish. Muddle remaining strawberries and basil sprig in a cocktail shaker, add gin, sugar syrup, plenty of ice and shake vigorously until chilled. Double strain into a rocks glass over 2 large ice cubes and top with lemonade. Garnish with the reserved strawberry.

Note: Feel free to mix things up and experiment with the variety of basil. Aristotle works beautifully, though sweet, Genovese and Thai would all create delicious variants of the drink.


Rhubarb Negroni

Method

Stir down ingredients with ice in a short glass and garnish with an orange wedge and a pink grapefruit twist. 


French Amaretto Martini

(Kindly selected by Yorkshire Dales Distillery)

Ingredients

Method

(If skipping egg whites, skip to step 2)

  •  Separate an egg and shake whites on own for 30 seconds
  •  Add all ingredients to shaker and shake for 30 seconds
  •  Add ice and shake again for 30 seconds
  •  Strain into coupe and garnish with rose petals
  •  Serve alongside a glass of prosecco and sip alternately

Bedale Bramble

Ingredients

Method
Add the gin, Crème de Mure, muddled blackberries, lime juice and sugar syrup to a shaker and shake until mixed.

Add crushed ice to the glass.

Strain the mixture into the glass and mix.

Top with more crushed ice and sparkling wine.

Garnish with fresh blackberries.


Ghostly G&T

Ingredients

●      50ml York Gin Grey Lady

●      100ml Fever-Tree Refreshingly Light tonic

●      Ice – ideally large cubes

●      Garnish: Dried Lemon peel

Method

Ice first, gin next, then tonic, gently stir and add your garnish.


Dry Summer

(Kindly selected by Cooper King Distillery)

Ingredients

  • 1/3 a lime, cut into wedges
  • 1/2 medium orange, pulled into segments
  • 50ml Cooper King Herb Gin
  • 15ml elderflower cordial
  • fresh rosemary sprig 
  • lime peel to garnish 

Method

Squeeze the lime wedges into a cocktail shaker, then add the lime itself along with orange segments. Muddle until well juiced. Add the rest of the ingredients, plenty of ice and shake vigorously until chilled. Double strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with the lime peel and sprig of rosemary.


Slingsby Clover Club

Ingredients

Method

Dry shake all ingredients for 30 seconds. Add half a cup of ice then shake again until cold. Strain into a chilled coup glass and garnish with raspberries or a strawberry.
